Eurobike round-up: Part One

Eurobike 2019 kicked off yesterday in Friedrichshafen, Germany, welcoming more than 1,400 exhibitors showing their latest ideas, start-ups displaying their skills as pioneers and award winners presenting their high-calibre products

Pirelli launched the Cinturato cross and gravel, the line of tyres dedicated to “drop-bar cyclists who enjoy much more than tarmac alone”. Adapted from the recently launched Scorpion MTB line, the characterising concept of the new tyres is the proposal of models designed for a variety of terrains, based on their consistency, from the hard to the mixed ones.

The DMR Versa is aimed at those who want the option to ride flat, clipped in, or both. “It’s a bit of combination,” said Rory Hitchens of Upgrade. “The response so far has been really good.”

Also on display were the Deathgrips, which now has new colours in the range, and the OiOi saddle is in two colourways, grey and green.

Ritchey also showcased new products, including the new Road Logic Disc Frameset, which possesses flat-mount brake compatibility, thru-axels and a carbon fibre fork.

Challenge had its handmade TLR tubeless road and tubeless Tubular Gravel. “What you can do with a handmade tyre is different to what you can do with a machine tyre,” added Hitchens.

Wahoo launched the Kickr bike, the “first smart bike that’s built on the world’s leading indoor cycling training ecosystems”. “The Kickr bike represents the next generation of indoor smart training for Wahoo and delivers the most complete, unparalleled riding experience in its class,” says Mike Saturnia, CEO of Wahoo Fitness.

“It is the ultimate product for discerning, data-driven athletes who are ready for a feature-rich, top-quality, responsive, dedicated indoor bike as the new cornerstone of their fitness.”

Magura was displaying the MCi, the ‘world’s first’ hydraulic brake that’s fully integrated into the handlebar, as well as its new eSTOP, the two disc brakes that are specially adapted to e-bike requirements.

The Magura #customizeyourbrake options enable riders to individualise their brakes – choosing the brake model that suits them and matching it to their riding style with the right rotors and brake pads.

Storck Bicycle presented a large number of new models to the public for the first time at Eurobike, and visitors and customers will have the opportunity to test the new bikes extensively in the outdoor area.

Urban transportation specialist Tern unveiled a dedicated #BikesForBusiness area at the show, highlighting the range of Tern bikes and customised accessories that can be used for business applications.

“There are so many ways that e-bikes can be used to optimize business operations—we’re here at Eurobike to show potential customers and dealers how our unique products can serve their needs,” said Matt Davis, Tern sales director

Last night, hundreds of guests celebrated the 43 winners of the 15th Eurobike Award. As many as nine innovations scored a Gold Award. The Award jury selected the winners from almost 400 entries, based on criteria such as design, degree of innovation and workmanship as well as price-performance ratio and added value.
