Towns in the Netherlands are to consider proposals to heat cycle lanes to boost the numbers travelling on two wheels in winter, reports the BBC.
Such a scheme would cost between £26-52,000 per mile of track, which would use a geo-thermal energy to prevent snow and ice settling.
Marcel Boerefijn, the visionary behind the luxury bike lanes, suggested that savings would be made in a reduction of accidents and less salt needed to prevent ice on the road.
Spokeswoman for the Dutch Cyclists Unions, Arien de Jong, said: "We are very excited about the heated paths, because they could prevent so much misery. If cycle lanes are frozen over for four weeks, that results in about 7,000 more accidents involving cyclists."
A feasability study could begin as soon as next year, beginning in the town of Zutphen, while Uterecht is also believed to be conisdering the scheme.
