Derby Cycling Group pens open letter over “farcical” cycle lane plans

Derby Cycling Group has sent an open letter to Michael Gove MP and Therese Coffey MP, at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), Jesse Norman, minister at the Department for Transport with responsibility for cycling, and Matt Hancock, the health and social care secretary whose department deals with health issues caused by poor air quality.

The letter urges DEFRA to reject the element of Derby’s outline business case for air quality which plans to remove cycle lanes from Friar Gate. It claims removing these cycle lanes will put cyclists lives and safety at risk and reduce the number of people cycling here. Derby Cycling Group has said it wants a clean air strategy which protects non-polluting forms of transport, such as walking and cycling, and does not remove the facilities. It added that it is “farcical” that the city council intend to invoke a clean air strategy which involves removing facilities for the ‘least polluting’ form of on-road transport while doubling the road space dedicated to the ‘most polluting’ form of transport.

The letter can be read here.
