Google's end-of-year zeitgeist report "offers a unique perspective on the year's major events and trends." Like last year, Lance Armstrong and the Tour de France feature high on the list of searched for terms. And, in Froogle's sports and hobby section, online shoppers are clearly keen on bicycles, with the term 'mountain bike' being third on the list.

Cycling topics remain high in Google’s popularity index

Zeitgeist, according to Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, is a German word meaning "the general intellectual, moral, and cultural climate of an era."

A statement from Google said its end-of-year zeitgeist report was "based on billions of searches conducted by Google users around the world, the 2004 Year-End Zeitgeist offers a unique perspective on the year’s major events and trends."

On Froogle, the top sports and hobby searches were:

1. poker chips

2. airsoft guns

3. mountain bike

In the most searched for sports terms, David Beckham came top, the Euro 2004 footie championships came second and cycling’s Tour de France came a very respectable second. In the same list, Lance Armstrong came fifth.

In December, ‘Bicycle races’ was revealed to be one of Merriam-Webster’s most requested online definitions.
