Cycle sport’s big guns nod through lid-law for pros

The swift move to impose a helmet law for all pro bike races – a move widely expected after the death of Andrei Kivilev in March – was agreed by Vittorio Adorni, president of the Professional Cycling Council; Francesco Moser, president of the ACP; Hein Verbruggen, president of the UCI; Jean-Marie Leblanc, president of AIOCC and director of the Tour de France; and Manolo Saiz, president of the AIGCP.

All these presidents "confirmed their adhesion to the UCI’s initiative which is to render mandatory helmets for professional riders," said a statement by the UCI.

As expected, the rule will come into force before the Giro d’Italia, which starts May 10th. To date, there has been no confirmation of whether helmets will have to be worn on hot, mountain climbs.

NB

Much of the April issue of BicycleBusiness is devoted to the subject of mandatory helmet use, for both pros and everyday cyclists. Madison, importer of Giro helmets, is for a lid-law; Fisher Outdoor Leisure, importer of Met helmets, is against.
