The European Standards Commission (CEN) Working Group on Cycle Accessories will initially tackle luggage carrier standards to tie in with existing work on child seats for which new standards are now in draft form.
Chris Juden, CTC Technical Officer, is chairing the new working group, which he hopes will go on to improve standards for other cycle accessories.
He said: Our objective is to raise the quality of products to that of the best and ensure that cyclists are provided with equipment that meets
the highest safety standards.
CTC is just about the only cycling organisation doing this kind of work in Europe and making sure the consumer knows whats going on.
Juden, 45, a qualified engineer, will chair the first meeting of the cycle accessories group this autumn. He became involved with the work of the
British Standards Institution 16 years ago when he joined CTC staff. He has also worked on international standards but European standards are
becoming more influential.
We all know that the main danger to cyclists comes from other vehicles but it is important that cycling equipment is also as safe as we can make
it, he said.
CTC Director Kevin Mayne said: Chriss expertise makes him the ideal person for this job. The appointment is also recognition of the fact that
CTC is leading the way for cycle consumers. Our five-year plan consultation, Vision 2000, recognises that this could be an important future role for CTC.
