There has been a large reduction in the number of deaths and serious injuries in the eight areas currently taking part in the trial, which allows the use of funds from speeding tickets to pay for extra cameras(ie hypothecation).
Speed is the biggest single factor in road crashes and last year was responsible for 1,100 deaths and 12,600 serious injuries on UK roads.
David Simper, CTC Campaigns and Policy Manager, said: "Speed cameras can lead to a reduction in road deaths and help make our roads more attractive to all road users. Many people are deterred from cycling by fast moving traffic and will not let their children cycle either. It is absolutely right that drivers breaking speed limits and putting lives at risk are punished."
