Cops want kids off motorbikes

Cardiff East Police have been running a scheme to get youths off noisy trials motorbikes and quadbikes and on to mountain bikes instead. Funded by Communities First and the Community Safety Partnership, the Bike Amnesty has been running since the summer. £250 vouchers for bicycles are able to be redeemed in Halfords stores.

Inspector Lisa Gore from the Cardiff East neighbourhood policing team told a Cardiff newspaper:

“The illegal use of off-road motorcycles and quads causes misery to many residents of Cardiff East. The issue is continually brought up at PACT (Partners and Communities Together) meetings and we receive many calls every week in relation to it.

“These bikes and quads can be very dangerous, posing a risk to the riders and pedestrians as well as disturbing the quality of life for residents.”

Eight bikes were traded in at the Halfords store on Newport Road, Cardiff, which was followed by a 60 per cent drop in calls about problems of noisy motorbikes.

The motorbikes handed in must be legally owned (obviously) and roadworthy.
