Property developers have started to erect a container-based leisure complex beneath the iconic Tyne Bridge on Gateshead’s Quayside. The complex will feature a micro brewery, tap room, restaurant, and will also be the new home for Backyard Bike Shop, a custom-build bike and coffee shop.
By The River Brew Co is a £1.5 million development that will remain on the Quayside for up to four years. It’s a development by Rob Cameron and Dave Stone of Wylam Brewery, who already operate a micro brewery and 800-capacity event space in the Palace of the Arts building Newcastle’s historic Exhibition Park as well as two upscale pubs in Newcastle city centre.
Cameron is an enthusiastic cyclist who, last year, co-founded the chic Backyard Bike Shop of Newcastle’s Ouseburn Valley with Nic Vieri.
The development on Gateshead’s Hillgate Quays will be open in time for the Great Exhibition Of The North, a citywide expo staged from June to September.
The "container village" will employ about 100 people. The site is at the foot of the world-famous Tyne Bridge and close to the Millennium cycle and pedestrian bridge.
