Cipollini, who boasts more than 170 victories in his professional career, including a record-holding 34 stages of the Giro d’Italia, approached Specialized though his agent in August of last year.
‘The Lion King’ had seen the 1.0kg Specialized racing frames under Festina riders in the Tour de France, and was interested in pursuing a similar relationship with the American company.
Acqua & Sapone team bikes will be custom-sized versions of the company’s ’02 S-Works Road production frame, built from superlight E5 alloy Columbus tubing. The Specialized bikes will be equipped with Mavic wheels, Shimano Dura Ace groups, 3T stem and bars. They will also outfitted with Specialized water bottles and cages, SpeedZone Pro computer, and S-works Turbo tires.
A limited edition of Acqua e Sapone bikes and components will be made available to Specialized IBDs worldwide.
