Halfords marketing and merchandising director David Clayton-Smith says cycle sales are up 36 percent on the same time last year, with sales of inner tubes and repair kits up by 18% percent.

"We expect these trends to continue until petrol sales get back to normal and we’re bracing ourselves for a bumper weekend."

And if more bikes are bought and brought out of retirement a mini renaissance could be on the way (although let’s not get too carried away!).

Green Party Greater London Assembly member Jenny Jones said: "Just think of all the people who have been able to safely cross the road, the children who haven’t suffered asthma attacks and the people who haven’t died in car accidents over the last few days."
