Will this year's event manage to top 2010's 85,000 cyclists?

Boris Johnson and Kelly Brook launch London Sky Ride

The Mayor of London’s Sky Ride route was revealed today, covering 7.2 miles (11.6km) in the city centre.

Last year over 85,000 people took part in the ride, which is organised by the Mayor, Sky and British Cycling in partnership with Transport for London (TfL).

The circular route will bring cyclists closer to the London Eye than before, running across Westminster Bridge, before looping back up past Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, up the Mall, onto Trafalgar Square, through Whitehall and out onto the river views of the Embankment.

The ride – taking place on Sunday September 4th from 9.30am to 4.30pm – will also take in St James’ Park, Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London and London Bridge.

Model, presenter and long-term Sky Ride supporter Kelly Brook helped launch the event today. Sir Chris Hoy will be among the famous faces joining the Mayor and Brook on the day.

The Mayor of London said: “London’s fantastic Sky Ride is going from strength to strength, helping people of all ages and experience to enjoy the capital’s most iconic sights on two wheels. I urge people to dust off their saddles for this free and family-friendly event to enjoy whizzing through the city on traffic free roads. This is a key part of my cycling revolution which aims to make London a cycle-friendly city, encouraging more and more people that pedal power is the way forward.”

Kelly Brook added: “Cycling is a fun way to spend time with friends and keep in shape. This will be my third year supporting the Mayor of London’s Sky Ride and I can’t wait for the September 4th to come around. It’s such a fantastic way to get out on your bike and enjoy the sights of the capital in your own time, with friends or family. Plus there is loads of stuff going on throughout the day to enjoy on and off your bike. So what are you waiting for? Come down and join me for a fun-packed family day out!”
