First six months of the year sees stilted cycle retail

Bikes sales struggle in Holland in 2010

Bike sales in the Netherlands have stuttered for the first six months of 2010, according to the latest figures from market research giant GfK, as reported by BikeEurope.

Poor weather is thought to be a key factor in the drop in bike unit sales. Compared like-for-like with the previous year, every month saw a fall in sales with February dropping 29 per cent, April down ten per cent and May falling 18 per cent.

According to BikeEurope’s report, electric bike sales were marginally up on 2009, with higher priced bikes helping to buoy sales revenue for retailers.

The data was compiled from IBDs and ‘mass merchandisers’, including internet and post retailers.
