Bike shop releases reet handy Yorkshire Grand Depart phrase guide

You won’t need us to tell you that the Tour de France Grand Depart takes place in just a few days – the official opening ceremony takes place in Leeds this Thursday. To mark the occasion, local cycle retailer JE James Cycles has provided a helpful phrase guide for visitors struggling to penetrate the local dialect.

The bike shop sheds light on phrases like "that’s a right bobby dazzler", "it’s varry snod" and "does tha want a craggy, brailsy?" in the phrase guide, which can be found online here.

Customers are being encouraged to send in their local phrases, with a chance of winning membership to the Yorkshire Dialect Society and goodie packs.

Adam Simmonite, from JE James Marketing team, said: "After the news that the official ‘Tourmakers’ were been discouraged from using favourite Yorkshire greeting of ‘love’ we thought we would offer a ‘reet good’ (and lighthearted) guide to how a fusion of French, Cycling and Yorkshire would work, we like to think of it as a ‘Frenchshire’ guide. We were bowled over when the esteemed Yorkshire Dialect society gave it the thumbs up."

The retailer is also encouraging local businesses to alter their opening hours to allow staff to watch the race as it passes through.
