Bicycle trade-in scheme pioneered

According to this report on BikeRadar.com, a pioneer scheme in Mannheim Germany is offering cash for traded in bicycles.

The scheme, which is not dissimilar to the one introduced on these shores in the last budget for cars, provides 50 euros to anyone purchasing a new bike.

The pioneering scheme has the potential to go nationwide across Germany, but has already become oversubscribed in the city where funds have dried up.

Mannheim city council is currently splitting the cost of the scheme with a major bike retailer in an effort to cut down on car journeys, more than half of which are under three miles in the city, according to research.
