186,000 frequent users have signed up to Barcelona’s bike hire scheme since it launched two years ago, according to this Bike Europe report.
The total – which equates to approximately 15 per cent of Barcelona’s adult population – has almost doubled expectations for the initiative, which estimated that the scheme would be used by 85,000 subscribers over three years.
The scheme, which employs 200 staff, provides for 6,000 bicycles over 58,000 trips in the summer and 35,000 in the winter.
London is due to see its own cycle hire scheme arrive in May 2010, as part of what London Mayor Boris Johnson is calling a ‘cycle revolution’.
