Bafang has started 2026 with an early award win for its H730, as the German Design Award 2026 recognised its innovation in eBike drive systems.

As eBikes become essential to daily mobility across Europe, the 3-speed automatic shifting hub system “meets the increasing riders’ demands with an innovative GVT (Gear Variable Transmission) technology that blends seamless integration, minimal maintenance, and all-weather reliability”.

Reflecting on H730 innovation, the German Design Award jury particularly noted: “Automatic gear shifting that integrates seamlessly into everyday riding distinguishes the ‘H730 Automatic Gear Hub Motor’. The clear, low-maintenance construction and consistent integration of technology ensure a distinctive, timeless user experience. The elegant combination of comfort and functionality is particularly impressive, making this product exemplary for outstanding technical design in this field.”

Smooth shifting for comfortable pedalling

The H730 automatically shifts at two specific speed points, seamlessly cycling through its 0.76, 1.0, and 1.31 gear ratios to deliver the right support at the right time. Closely-spaced gear ratios ensure seamless transitions between stages, maintaining a natural and continuous pedalling feel, effectively eliminating both “ghost pedalling” and “labored pedaling”.

  • Low gear (0.76): Delivers effortless starts and confident uphill climbing.
  • Middle gear (1.0): Acts as a direct drive for smooth, efficient power transfer on flat terrain.
  • High gear (1.31): Maintains a natural, comfortable pedalling cadence at higher speeds.

Quiet motor for a relaxing ride

Advanced electromagnetic design, composite materials, and precision balancing work in harmony to ensure near-silent operation. The H730 lets the rider enjoy the surroundings without mechanical distraction.

Low Maintenance for an easy ownership experience

The fully enclosed automatic transmission eliminates the need for external derailleurs, gear cables, and shifter. This integrated design protects the core mechanics from rain, dust, and winter road salt, offering outstanding reliability and drastically reducing maintenance while enhancing the bike’s clean aesthetic.

Engineering breakthrough

Bafang H730 motor internal structure exploded rendering model Bafang H730 with Gear Variable Transmission wins German Design Award 2026Building on the success of the 2-speed H700 from the Bafang GVT series, and refined with insights from real-world riding in hilly terrain, the Bafang H730 was developed to conquer diverse urban and countryside landscapes. Adding a third gear, however, presented a significant engineering challenge.

On paper, the addition of a single gear introduced complex spatial constraints in the development phase. The initial theoretical design resulted in a 160mm rear stay width, which presented challenges for both aesthetics and frame compatibility.

Bafang highlights that the engineering team re-evaluated every millimetre of the motor and shifting structure, and, through rigorous testing and new manufacturing processes, the design was successfully optimised for the 148mm width – “achieving a perfect balance of performance, form, and fit”.

Integration for enhanced riding experience

The brand points out that its innovation lies not just in individual components, but in how they work together to create exceptional riding experiences. Here, the Bafang H730 hub system combines “intelligent assistance, clear information, and dependable power, allowing urban commuters to embrace a more joyful, confident, and truly seamless way to explore the world on two wheels”.

More models with OEM partners

The system is already featured on several popular bicycles in the market. More models, such as the Hercules URBANICO F3, will follow in the coming season, giving riders even more ways to experience the H730 auto-shift drive solution.
