With an inbuilt heartbeat sensor, an altimeter, an accelerator to gauge speed, and taptic wrist buzzes that could alert cyclists to turn left or right in cycle satnav apps, the new Apple Watch could be a winner for the Californian company. (And a pain-in-the-taptic-ass for everything from Swiss watch makers to cycle computer manufacturers – although as the Apple Watch monitors heartrate and other metrics from the wrist it may not be popular with sports cyclists, who prefer handlebar mounted devices.)
The Sports Edition Apple Watch, which meshes with iPhone 5s and the new iPhone 6 family, will monitor, track – and reward – a great many sports activities, including cycling.
Today’s Apple Event in California featured a great deal of road cycling, MTBing BMXing and family cycling.
The Apple Watch will cost £216 ($349) but will not be available until early 2015.
