Legal eagles from around the UK will be chambering on down to London's Herne Hill Velodrome on 1st September for the Hiscox Cycling Challenge. It sure makes a change from the - yawn-yawn - 40-mile sponsored bike ride. And lawyers have got a bob or two to spend on new bikes so these sort of events should be encouraged!

Ambulance-chasing solicitors overtaken by track-riding lawyers

Hiscox, a specialist insurer, has organised the charity track-racing event to raise money for the youth charity, Teenage Cancer Trust.

Teams of lawyers and individual legal competitors will sweat it out against each other on the historic Herne Hill track.

Camberwell barrister Kris Gledhill QC is helping Hiscox co-ordinate the event:

"The Hiscox Cycling Challenge will provide a rare opportunity to see city law professionals pitting their wits against each other outside of the law courts."

For those lawyers seeking to gain a competitive edge over their professional peers, three times World Champion cyclist Russell Williams will be on hand at the velodrome all summer to provide personal coaching and training.

For teams there will be the 2km Team Pursuit where teams of four to six race on a knockout basis until a winning team emerges.

Individuals can enter the points race, 500m time trial, sprint race or the "unknown distance race."

The event is due to reach a dramatic finale with a final mass participation Devil Take the Hindmost race, the trackie eliminator competition where the last rider of each lap is excluded until only one victorious cyclist is left riding.
