The recommendations form part of a report from the DETR1s School Transport Advisory Group (STAG), of which Sustrans is a member, which examines how the child’s journey to school can be made safer.

The report states: "Our aim should be to return by 2010 to the level of walking, cycling and bus use in the mid 1980s."

Paul Osborne, Sustrans Safe Routes to Schools Manager, said: "The STAG report is an important step towards achieving a safer environment for children. The report shows that there is a commitment in Government to changing the way children get to school and improving their fitness as

well as their safety."

"This report is currently the best example of co-operation between three government departments (DfEE, DoH and DETR) and voluntary bodies."
