Bike advocacy group Transportation Alternatives surveyed key bike routes during the strike and reported that bicycle use had increased by 500 percent over normal working days.
City officials did their bit to encourage cycle use. NYC’s contingency plan encouraged businesses to relax any no-bike policies.
"If at all possible, we hope that employers will offer a place to store bicycles as their employees seek to get to work during this very trying time," said a city official.
According to US trade mag Bicycle Retailer, a Fuji-sponsored website, bikethestrike.com, will continue to be published even though the strike has ended. The site provides bike commuting tips and city maps.
Karen Bliss of Fuji told bicycleretailer.com
"We knew there was a possibility that the strike would end but we figured we’d go ahead with the development [of the site], adding content that could be used for most any city should a transit strike affect other locations in the US."
