The 2000 ETA Green Transport Week launch was today hosted by Medway Council in Rochester.
Transport Minister Keith Hill MP gave the keynote launch speech at a conference in Rochester’s Corn Exchange building:
"86% of personal travel in Britain – in terms of distances travelled – is by car, van or taxi, said Hill.
This Government is committed to improving alternatives to using the car, and to allow people to feel less dependent on their car, particularly for short journeys.
"If we want to see change we need to tell people about the benefits of
sustainable travel, but more than that – we need to offer realistic,
practical and convenient choices and show that they work. The car should
represent just one transport option among several – cycling, walking,
public transport among them.
"So I am delighted to launch this year’s ETA Green Transport Week and wish its programme of events, initiatives and projects every success in this its eighth year."
