Tour de Yorkshire boosted local economy by £60m

Independent research has found that the Tour de Yorkshire boosted the local economy by £60m. The event was held at the end of April and saw more than two million spectators line the route. Race viewers spent 20 percent more than the previous year.

Accommodation spend was up by 27.8 percent year on year, and non-accommodation items such as food and drink, souvenirs and transport was up by 12.4 percent. The race was televised in 178 countries and watched by some 11.4 million global TV viewers across Eurosport and ITV4 which is double the amount in 2015.

The economic impact of the Tour de Yorkshire was revealed in a study carried out by Leeds Beckett University. It showed that 79 percent of the race spectators were from Yorkshire.

Sir Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “This is tremendous news for Yorkshire and the statistics speak for themselves – the public support for the Tour de Yorkshire is overwhelming.

“Even in the face of some not so welcoming weather, these statistics show that the Tour de Yorkshire is rapidly going from strength to strength.
