Motorbikes head into bus lanes today

Motorcycles will join cyclists in London’s bus lanes in an 18-month trial starting today. The experiment, backed by London Major Boris Johnson, will see motorbikes allowed into the red routes for the first time, but cyclists have raised concerns about their safety and the hazards of sharing the lanes with motorbikes.

The London Cycling Campaign led a petition signed by 3,000 cyclists requesting the trial be rethinked, while national cyclists association CTC told BikeBiz last November that it was concerned about the experiment.

CTC campaigns and policy manager Roger Geffen said: “Allowing motorbikes into bus lanes under the guise of an ‘experiment’ is a very worrying development."

Protests fell on deaf ears though, with the trial beginning today and running until mid-2010.

The success of the trial will be based on a variety of points, including road safety, according to TfL.
