Mark Beaumont Pedals for Scotland

Cycling Scotland has revamped the freshnio Pedal for Scotland ride with the assistance of Scottish long-distance cyclist Mark Beaumont.

A brand new Sportive 100 mile bike ride will be introduced at the freshnio Pedal for Scotland event – a timed ride through the Southern Uplands, taking place on Sunday September 12th, alongside the classic challenge – a 51-mile ride between Glasgow and Edinburgh.

In a move to make the event more inclusive than ever, Pedal for Scotland will also see a brand new free event for families with young children and those new to cycling, using a traffic-free off-road route around Glasgow Green with a range of music, entertainment and activities.

The annual Glasgow to Edinburgh bike ride attracted a record 7,000 riders last year, and organiser Cycling Scotland hopes the three-ride strong event will top that figure.

Mark Beaumont said: “The freshnlo Pedal for Scotland bike ride is an eagerly awaited event on the sporting calendar. It’s fantastic that Cycling Scotland has revamped the event to now incorporate the three different rides, allowing people of all abilities and ages to take part. 

“The Sportive ride is perfect for those who just don’t think 51 miles is enough. It will be a real test of people’s ability and I would encourage the hardcore cyclists to give it a shot. Not only will it be a timed challenge but the scenic route should make it an enjoyable experience for all those that take part.

“It will be a real challenge for most so people will have to think about their recovery after finishing. Milk helps re-hydration and recovery so it’s perfect that freshnlo are partners of the event.”

Cycling Scotland event organiser Andrew Pankhurst added: “freshnlo Pedal for Scotland has always presented a great challenge for people who want a healthy and active day out with friends, family or workmates, however Cycling Scotland want to involve cyclists of all ages and abilities which is why we’re introducing two new rides.

“We hope to encourage the broadest range of people possible to be part of Scotland’s biggest bike ride and hope everyone, from seasoned road riders through to those who just taken off their stabilisers to get involved, and show that cycling is the best way to travel.”
