Government transport questions reveal drop in funding for cycling

In the recent House of Commons transport questions, shadow transport minister Daniel Zeichner MP referenced the latest Cycling UK figures, which reveal that funding for cycling is set to drop dramatically in 2020.

Last November Cycling UK released figures that reveal cycling was set to recieve £300m for the next five years, which spread equally over the five years of Parliament would mean £1.39 per head, for everyone who is not a Londoner.

The leatest release from Cycling UK features a more in-depth look at the financial situation, and the current figures show a drop to just 72p per head.

Sam Jones, Cycling UK’s Campaigns Coordinator said: "For those not living in London, in 2020 Government spend on cycling and walking will be only 72p per head for the year- about the same price as two pints of milk. Meeting the Prime Minister’s aspirations of £10 per head for cycling, cash strapped local authorities will be expected to find a further £9.28 per head, and that’s not even including any commitment towards a walking budget.

"In contrast, by 2020, expenditure on motorways and trunk roads is set to skyrocket to 120 times that of cycling and walking. Despite wider concerns about cleaner air and an obesity crisis, it’s abundantly clear that, for this Government, active travel and our nation’s health are worth less than the price of milk."
