Five minutes with: Helmetor

In our latest series, we’re getting to grips with the brands that you deal with every day. The ‘Five minutes with’ series will present a company with five short, sharp and to-the-point questions about who they are and what they do. This week we’re joined by Helmetor founder Timothy Mccrea.

Can you tell us the history of the company?
I’m a teacher by day, but I’ve spent much of my free time inventing. Finally with Helmetor, my brother and friend took me seriously and in 2013, together we started out on the very colourful road to where we are now – producing the world’s first for helmet storage. It has not been so much a ‘learning curve’ as a learning cliff-face! But it has been worth it and I’ve learnt so much along the way.

What are you ultimately trying to achieve?
We would love to see every helmet have a home! Encouraging helmet use, especially amongst children. Banish the dilemma ‘what to do with your helmet when it’s not on your head’ to the history books. Helmetor becoming the standard accessory for helmet storage.

What gives you an edge over other brands in the industry?
Helmetor is not just another brand. It’s completely unique and has no natural predators in the current cycle market.

What innovations in the industry are exciting to you at the moment?
I love the resurgence of entrepreneurship within the industry, the bespoke hand-built bicycles, all the small businesses like ours who have not only dreamed but chased the dream – the individuals, start-ups – people we met at this year’s Cycle Show.

What does the future hold for the company?
Product-wise, we have some exciting future developments in the pipeline – a bike-mounted version and additional attachments for accessories such as cycle shoes and gloves etc. However, our current focus right now is all about letting the world know about Helmetor! Our vision is to see schools, cafes, workplaces, homes, vans, caravans and trail centres kitted out with Helmetors.
