Eurobike round-up: Part Two

Eurobike 2019 is currently taking place in Friedrichshafen, Germany, with more than 1,400 exhibitors showing their latest ideas, start-ups displaying their skills as pioneers and award winners presenting their high-calibre products

Continental was showcasing its two new ‘TR’ tubeless-ready tyres, Terra Trail and Terra Speed. The Terra Trail is a tyre that offers “unrivalled versatility, thanks to the aggressive tread pattern, offering steadfast traction across a multitude of terrains.” The Terra Speed is the faster tyre in the range due to its reduced prominence in tread pattern, which generates less rolling resistance.

Muc-Off is previewing its expanded tubeless range, and has created three steps for riders to follow and achieve the “perfect” puncture-free setup: prepare, inflate and maintain (PIM). “The tubeless revolution has well and truly arrived, and we’re stoked to be at the forefront, creating user-friendly solutions to help all types of cyclists make the switch or maintain their tubeless set up,” said Alex Trimnell, Muc-Off CEO.

Dahon is presenting some brand-new models for 2020 which includes the GB-2, the next iteration of Dahon’s 650b folding gravel bike. It is also presenting its range of new programmes, each offering partners the opportunity to make use of Dahon’s technical and marketing expertise.

Brompton has also launched its new Explore, including a 28L roll-top bag, an enhanced spares pouch and lower ratio 6-speed gearing to help riders to bust out of the city into the great outdoors.

Everyone who purchases an Explore bike will also receive a copy of Brompton’s new Explore book.

Created with micro-adventurer Alastair Humphreys, this shows exactly what’s possible on the Brompton Explore and includes Brompton’s City Escape Guides with routes out of major cities to help inspire your next trip.

“The Brompton Explore provides unparalleled freedom to those with a sense of adventure, as it’s as simple as packing the bag and jumping on the nearest bus, train or plane to escape the city for a long weekend or perhaps just taking a more scenic route home from work,” said Joel Natale, Brompton’s head of product.

On 5th September Look unveiled its new Geo-Trekking pedal range at its Eurobike Cocktail Party on its stand. The new Geo-Trekking range of three pedals, Geo-Trekking, Geo-Trekking Grip and Geo-Trekking ROC, is designed to meet the diverse needs of riders from the urban commuter to the enthusiast e-mountain bike rider.

Customs and anti-dumping duties, offshoring, global congestion, growing environmental concerns, urban mobility – the panel discussion on Thursday, focusing on the ASEANBIKE, brought it to light: the international bike industry is moving and volatile, with access to new markets promising new purchasing power. The panel featured several Southeast Asian insiders, including the Indonesian ambassador to Germany, the president of the Thai N.C.C. Exhibition Organizer (NEO), and the brand director of VEE TIRE CO. The ASEANBIKE will be hosted for the first time in Bangkok/Thailand on 3rd to 5th October 2019.

Stefan Reisinger, project manager of Messe Friedrichshafen, believes the ASEAN region to be a very promising market for western brands, both as a sourcing and production location and for the sale of high-end bicycles and accessories.

There were also talks with experts of the Eurobike Academy. Many workshops were fully booked, with some 450 participants registered on Thursday alone.

The issues discussed included talking points such as skills shortage, future DIN and EU standards for cargo bikes, digitalisation as an “existential challenge” for the high street, and the effects of the GDPR. There is still an opportunity to attend Eurobike Academy talks up until Saturday.
