The BBC reports that a judge has warned drivers to take more "responsibility" towards cyclists on the road as he jailed a motorist for killing a cyclist in Flintshire.
Range Rover driver John Evans, 45, was sentenced to 14 months for killing Alan Mort, 63, from Kinmel Bay. Evans was also banned from driving for 18 months and ordered to take an extended driving test.
The incident happened on a dual carriageway last February. The court heard that other drivers, including two driving behind the Range Rover, saw Mr Mort cycling in a straight line. He was also wearing a hi-vis jacket.
Mr Mort was killed instantly. Evans initially denied causing death by dangerous driving but changed his plea to guilty at the court hearing on Tuesday, reported the BBC.
Judge Parry told Evans he had "caused the wholly unnecessary and avoidable death" of the cyclist.
Mr Mort would have been visible to Evans for at least 20 seconds, the court heard.
Jude Parry said: "He was there to be seen. He was immediately in front of you yet you collided with him," the judge said.
He continued: "The use of the public roads by cyclists is probably now more enthusiastic than ever before. The danger to cyclists has never been under greater scrutiny, they are vulnerable road users. Drivers have a high responsibility to be aware of cyclists on the road."
Evans’ defence lawyer said: "He is at a complete loss to understand why he did not see [Mr Mort]."
The Flint to Bagillt dual carriageway where Mr Mort was killed is pictured above. It has more than ample room for a wide, separated bike path.
