DfT hosts Active Travel summit tomorrow

Academics, advocates and architects will mix with officials in charge of the government’s cycling and walking investment strategy team at tomorrow’s Active Travel Communications Summit at the Department for Transport HQ in London. The great and the good of cycling and walking will be giving talks at the afternoon event, which has been organised by Landor, publisher of Local Transport Today.

The summit’s chair will be the Bicycle Association’s Phillip Darnton OBE. There will be briefings from Alison Franks, the DfT’s cycling and walking investment strategy manager, and Sharon Goodsell, head of the cycling and walking Policy at the DfT. Their talks will be followed by a presentation on the mass media perspectives on cycling from BikeBiz executive editor Carlton Reid.

Jason Torrance, policy and partnerships director at Sustrans, will talk about funding for active travel, or lack thereof. Rachel Aldred of the University of Westminster will discuss women and cycling. Peter Murray, the chairman of New London Architecture, will talk on how to nfluence developers to create walking and cycling friendly places.

There will also be shorter presentations from Peter Davenport of cycle parking supplier Cycle Works; Richard Adams of AECOM; Ed Plowden of Bristol City Council; Andy Salkeld, the cycling coordinator of Leicester City Council; and Brian Deegan of Transport for London. Other speakers include planners and public health specialists as well as Roger Geffen MBE, policy director of the CTC, and Conrad Haigh, head of integrated transport at the Association of Train Operating Companies.
