Cycle City, the council-linked advocacy event run by the publisher of Local Transport Today, will be staged in Newcastle at the end of June. The event was first run in Birmingham and was staged in Leeds last year. Cycle City attracts transport, urban, place-making and public health professionals. The organisers have put out a call for papers.
Cycle City will be hosted in Newcastle Civic Centre by Newcastle City Council
The ‘Newcastle Fit for Cycling’ programme targets a 20 percent modal share for cycling of trips under five miles by 2021. This is part of the city’s ten-year plan to make the city a better place for all kinds of physical activity and to boost active travel options.
Newcastle was one of the cities to be awarded cash from the Cycle Ambition Grant. This was launched in 2013 with a pot of £94m with match funding to take it to almost £200m. This has now been extended, with £114m announced at the end of 2014.
