Brompton reveals carbon calculator

Ecologically minded cyclists are being targeted with the release of a Carbon Calculator from Brompton.

The BikeBiz Award winner worked with Cranfield University in the creation of the device, which is available from the Brompton website – www.brompton.co.uk.

The calculator makes it possible to compare the carbon footprint of an individual bike with how far a cyclist would have to ride their Brompton to make up for the emissions generated during manufacture and distribution.

Carbon Footprint Ltd has confirmed the carbon emissions assessment complies with PAS 2050, the official standard for calculating a product’s carbon footprint.

“We’re pleased to see that Brompton is taking a leadership position by measuring the carbon impact of their cycles versus other commuting, and travel, options," said Carbon Footprint Ltd’s Dr Wendy Buckley.

"With the new calculator, users can now clearly see the difference between their current commuting option and a Brompton. Cycling is a clear environmental winner and a Brompton is a very practical solution that looks good too.”

Brompton has also launched a Corporate Social Responsibility section of its website – branded ‘Environment and Society’. The firm is also working with the Re-Cycle charity – which send unwanted bikes and parts to Africa where they are much needed – and the Golden Mile Transport initiative.

Brompton marketing manager Katharine Horsman added: “Thinking about the way our company impacts on the environment and society is something we have been doing at Brompton for a long time; we are keen to make positive contributions wherever we can.

"This new section of the website has been introduced to not only document some of the things we do but also to encourage others to consider their own impact.”
