Brighton bike share scheme wins industry award

The scheme’s green credentials saw it finish ahead of the Rampion Offshore Wind Farm and Brighton and Hove Archaeological Society, who were also shortlisted for the award.

Hourbike – the company operating the scheme– owner Tim Caswell commented: “We’re thrilled to win this award because nominations come directly from the Brighton & Hove community. Getting this recognition in just a few months of operation is humbling, and illustrates how proud people are to have the scheme in their city.

”Thanks to Brighton and Hove City Council and Coast to Capital for enabling the scheme to go ahead with their funding. And thanks to our sonorous Life Water and American Express for their ongoing support.”

Chair of the Council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee Cllr Gill Mitchell added: “Well done to everyone involved in setting this up including the Hourbike team and council staff, past and present. It speaks volumes for the city’s environmental conscience that the scheme has been so warmly embraced as one of the best-used bike shares in the country.”

Almost 20,000 users have signed up to the scheme already totalling 185,000 miles cycled. Residents and visitors can hire and locate the Life Bikes via the SoBi app.
