Bicycle wins ‘best invention’ poll

As of Thursday morning, the bicycle was out in front with a whopping 65 percent of the vote.

Trailing in at second was electricity with 18 percent. However, combine electricity with electric light – which is only fair – and the energy combination does better in the poll. Er, 21 percent when added together…

Vaccination has attracted only 9 percent of the votes cast to date. Bizarrely, the computer ("with world wide web") lollops near the bottom of the heap with a paltry 5 percent. Why haven’t the PC geeks been voting in droves for ‘their’ technology?

Once again, it’s been shown that cycling can mobilise supporters extremely effectively.

At the beginning of November, cycle-related projects won three of the major gongs handed out on BBC1 to celebrate the National Lottery’s 10th Birthday. Votes for this award scheme were cast by 1p telephone calls. Sustrans’ National Cycle Network beat the Eden Project and Tate Modern to walk off with the top gong.
