Top-class rally driver Colin McRae has been poached from Scott by Paligap. For training purposes the speedy Scotsman will now ride Kona bikes instead of Scott. And Paligap is to produce a signature bike for a springtime release into IBDs and Halfords. McRae's business manager secured a royalty deal for the driver so each bike sold earns him a wee percentage

When does a Rally have more to do with Kona than Scott?

McRae drives for the FordFocus team, which is ironic because the Kona MTB team is no longer sponsored by FordFocus.

McRae famously used to drop in to the Scott UK HQ on Tyneside to pick up his freebie bikes but his manager has now secured a commercial deal with Paligap.

Both he and his co-driver Nicky Grist have signed two-year deals with Kona and Paligap.

The McRae signature model is to be called the Stage One and features a 6061 aluminium frame emblazoned with blue and white McRae graphics. The bike will retail for £400 and will be supported by POS and consumer mag advertising. There will also be a tie-up with games maker Codemasters and their New Colin McRae 3 computer game.

McRae said: "I thought it was a great idea, having a signature bike as I am really into biking and I know that Kona is a major brand. It feels good to have a respected name as a personal sponsor.”

Paligap Director David Lane said: “The tie up between Colin and ourselves is further proof that Paligap are committed to building the Kona brand in the UK.”
