Volt partners with Shimano for STEPS folding e-bike

Volt has released the details of a new folding e-bike created in partnership with Shimano.

The new folding bike – named the Axis – features a 250w Shimano STEPS system motor and an Alifine Di2 eight-speed gear hub combined with a Gates CDX carbon belt drive system. Volt claims that the bike – which is due to be released in summer 2017 – will be the first to integrate all of these elements into a foldable bike.

The Gates CDX carbon belt drive system is constructed from stretch-free carbon-fibre tensile chords covered by a weather-proofing polyurethane shell. The belt drive presents a lighter alternative to a traditional chain and is easier to maintain, whilst retaining the strength and durability.

Both the front and rear wheels are fitted with Shimano Alfine hydraulic disc-breaks to provide reliable braking power. When folded, the bike will lock together into a compact unit due to a system of strategically placed magnets.
