Vauxhall and Greenwich to become ‘Go Dutch’ testing grounds?

London’s Greenwich and Vauxhall locations could be in line to benefit from significant cycle improvements.

Prior to London’s Mayoral elections, the London Cycling Campaign (LCC) campaigned vigorously for candidates to back its ‘Love London, Go Dutch‘ pledges designed to improve cycle conditions on London’s roads. All major candidates – including the victorious Boris Johnson – agreed to the pledges.

The Green Party’s Jenny Jones quizzed the Mayor on his commitment to the pledges during Mayor’s Question Time, when Johnson named Greenwich and Vauxhall as likely to benefit from a ‘Go Dutch’ transformation.

The LCC said: "Vauxhall is frequently cited as one of London’s most dangerous and least people-friendly locations, with up to five lanes of motor traffic forming a noisy and polluted one-way system.

"The junction forms a major barrier to cyclists travelling between south London and West End, as well as to countless local walking and cycling journeys."

Lambeth Cyclists coordinator Charlie Holland said: "We welcome Vauxhall becoming a flagship ‘Go Dutch’ project and can’t wait to see the thousands of primary and secondary children at the schools adjacent to the current one-way system cycling in comfort and safety from their schools across Vauxhall Bridge, along Nine Elms Lane, or along the Albert Embankment."

The LCC added that the historic Greenwich town is blighted by a one-way system and paltry pedestrian or cycling facilities.
