August saw a fall in the number of bikes imported into the United States, according to this report on BRAIN. Imports dropped 1.822 million units in the month.
Seemingly mirroring demand in the UK, road bike imports rose 13 per cent, despite bikes in the category rising from an average (unit value) of $283 from $269. Children’s bike imports saw a 28 per cent fall for 24-inch bikes, while 20-inch bikes fell 25 per cent. 26-inch mountain bikes and ‘comfort’ bikes fell 13 per cent by 475,550 units.
Despite the falls, Taiwan has actually seen orders rise due to increased demand for 700c road and utility bikes. The average unit value for adult bikes is $100 greater per unit – outweighing the drop in children’s bikes in terms of value.
BikeBiz reported earlier in the year that the UK has seen a 35 per cent decline in bicycle imports.
