The Phoenix Theatre in Leicester will showcase cycle-related movies from Australia, Italy, China, America, Finland, France and the UK, including classics such as BMX Bandits, Bicycle Thieves, American Flyers, Beijing Bicycle, Cyclomania, A Sunday in Hell and A Day Out. The event is backed up with promotions from Leicester City Council and local IBDs.

Two-wheeled film fest planned for Bike Week

The festival will be held during Bike Week 2003, 14th-22nd June.

160 film tickets will be given away free to Leicester schools, colleges, hospitals and workplaces that take part in Bike Week events. IBDs donating prizes to promote the film festival include South Wigston Cycle Centre, Leicester Bike Park, City Cycles of Coalville, Pedal Power of Loughborough and On Yer Bike of Oadby.

Matthew Linley, director of the Phoenix Theatre said:

"I’m one of several Phoenix staff who cycle to work every day and we are delighted to support this film festival. This theatre provides a unique experience in the heart of the UK’s first Environment City and we want to encourage people to cycle to all the events the theatre provides."

Some of the films have been sponsored by the Cyclemagic Centre and Sustrans.

Alongside the matinee showing of the 1948 classic Bicycle Thieves, on Monday 16th June, the Cyclemagic Centre will provide free Data-Tag systems for the first twelve people who turn up to see the film by bike. Cyclemagic will also stage a display of out-of-the-ordinary bikes on the Phoenix piazza on the last day of the festival, Sunday 22nd June.
