The capital’s Barclays Cycle Hire scheme has won an Annual Award for Excellence in Passenger Transport.
The scheme, nicknamed Boris Bikes, won after serving four million journeys and achieving 100,000 members within its first year.
The Chartered Institute of Logisitics (CILT) handed Transport for London (TfL) the award at a gala dinner at the London Marriott Hotel, Grosvenor Square, last night (October 20th).
As well as its popularity, CILT singled out the hire scheme’s crime-tackling measures: “Theft of cycles and vandalism were identified early, resulting in unique identification of each cycle, large enough to be seen on CCTV [pictured below]. Less than one per cent of the cycles have been stolen.”
The shortlist for the award was made up of the City and County of Swansea and Transport for London: London Rail.
Fifteen awards were dished out on the night, designed to encourage excellence and best practice in logistics and transport. Eddie Stobart’s Andrew Tinkler was another winner on the night, winning praise for – among other things – his efforts to deliver sustainable distribution incuding reducing the number of lorries on UK roads.
