Bradley Wiggins, Britain’s first winner of the Tour de France, is now favourite to win BBC Sports Personality of the Year, according to Ladbrokes.
Wiggins being favourite for SPOTY won’t come as much of a surprise, as his is a rare example of British sports success this summer – succeeding when Murray couldn’t quite overcome Federer at Wimbledon and the England team couldn’t muster up any heroes on the football pitch at Euro 2012.
Should Wiggins win the BBC SPOTY he’ll follow Mark Cavendish picking up the award last year. Prior to Cavendish, only two cyclists had won the prize – Sir Chris Hoy in 2008 and then – in 1965 – Tommy Simpson.
With the Olympics still to come, Wiggins may yet facing some tough competition but – as Ladbrokes notes – it’ll have to be something special to knock the Le Tour winner from being the most likely winner.
"Wiggins has entered the realms of sporting legend," said David Williams of Ladbrokes said. "The Olympians will have to do something amazing to prevent him taking the Sports Personality crown.
"He can expect a busy festive period later this year. A knighthood must surely be well within his grasp after his heroics in France."
According to Ladbrokes, Bradley Wiggins is the 11/10 favourite to win the BBC Sports Personality Of The Year, while he’s 5/1 to join Sir Chris Hoy as a cycling knight in the New Year’s Honours List.
