Heres the embargoed EBMA press release mentioned in the previous news story. The face-saving fax from Parisj is nine-tenths spin. The actual reason for the release the embarrassing forced withdrawal of the EBMA chairmans linked dumping complaint against China and Taiwan is tucked away at the end of paragraph three

PRESS RELEASE

EMBARGO UNTIL MONDAY JANUARY 24th 2000

THE EBMA WANTS CIRCUMVENTION RULES TIGHTENED

The EBMA members met on the 20th January 2000 to reconfirm their vital stand to safeguard the European bicycle manufacturing industry.

Dissatisfied with the effectiveness of the 1997 EU Regulation on the circumvention of Chinese bicycle anti-dumping measures the EBMA laid a complaint with the European Commission on the import of bicycle frames, forks and wheels to try and improve the situation in regard to extensive circumvention and unfair competition. Further and deeper reflection has brought the EBMA members to what they see as a more effective solution.

The EBMA will therefore very firmly apply pressure to make sure that the circumvention rules are tightened and better observed and will approach the Commission to withdraw the complaint on frames, forks and wheels from China and Taiwan.

The EBMA members are unanimous in continuing their strong stand to take all necessary steps to maintain the essential good business health of the European bicycle manufacturing industry.

Signed
