Reports are emerging suggesting that Event Scotland are to submit a proposal to Tour de France chiefs requesting to host the opening stage of the 2017 competition.
The national events agency is to propose either Glasgow or Edinburgh as destinations for the time trial stage, which kicks the Tour off each year.
Paul Bush of Event Scotland told the BBC he estimates the cost to host a stage would be around the five million pound mark, though could put £100 million back into the Scotland’s economy.
Mr Bush told BBC Scotland radio’s Good Morning Scotland: "To bring the Grand Depart Tour de France to Scotland – which is one of the greatest sporting events every year – in 2017 would be a huge coup."
Bids from as far afield as Japan, the Middle east and America are also said to be under consideration by Tour director Christian Prudhomme and his team.
