National grocer Sainsbury’s has promised to part fund an extension to Carlisle’s cycleway, according to local paper News and Star.
£370,000 has been pledged by the retailer for the £1 million investment programme in the area.
Sainsbury’s has had plans for a new £40m store in the city approved by Carlisle City Council, with the funding for the path part of the deal, according to the paper.
The ‘element 3’ extension to Carlisle’s ‘Connect 2’ cycleway will see cyclists able to travel from Dlason to the north side of Castle Way on the paths. When the ‘element’ is complete, Sustrans is planning to release more funds to complete further sections of the cycleway.
“It will be brilliant for the schoolchildren and good for Carlisle as a healthy city," said Hugh McDevitt – Denton Holme’s Labour councillor. "Parents would know their children were safe going to school because they won’t have to go through the city.
“It will help bring the city closer together.”
