Call for safety lighting to fall in line with helmet rules

Petition to abolish VAT on bike lights with Gov

A petition calling on the government to scrap VAT on cycle lights has landed with Downing Street’s online e-petitions page.

The author asks why safety equipment such as helmets are VAT free, yet cycle lights, which are required by law as a safety accessory, are subject to the 20 per cent tax.

At present bicycle lights are classed as a ‘luxury item’. In the past sports nutrition brands have lobbied against a hike in VAT, though the Government decided to add the tax despite 4,315 signatures objecting.
