The scienceinsport.com team is managed by Peter Slater, the marketing manager at SiS.
He was chuffed to bits with the team’s performance at the world cup. Riding in the team’s colours were world sprint champion Victoria Pendleton, and Olympic champion from 2000, Jason Queally.
2004 gold medal winner Bradley Wiggins, a SiS user since his days as a junior, wasn’t riding at the event but he was commentating for BBC Grandstand. If it hadn’t been for a tight bit of cropping, BBC viewers would have seen the SiS logo on Wiggins’ borrowed black shirt.
However, there was no way to crop to logo when the medals started to be won.
Victoria Pendleton came away with a gold medal in the sprint, and two bronze medals in the 500m time trial and Keirin. Jason Queally was a close runner up to current Olympic Champion Chris Hoy in the Kilo.
Slater is happy he also has a new crop of riders coming through the ranks:
"Matthew Crampton, just 19 years old, had a fantastic weekend," said Slater.
"Although Matt didnÂ’t win any medals he certainly had his home town crowd on the edge of their seats as he beat current Olympic Sprint Champion Ryan Bailey, former World Sprint Champion Shane Kelly and then Britsh team mate Ross Edgar in winning the sprint ‘B’ final. Matt is certainly a sprinter with a big future ahead of him."
The scienceinsport.com track team is an extension of the existing Science in Sport team which competes regularly in all disciplines of cycling and triathlon. Registering as a UCI trade team presents Science in Sport with exposure and PR opportunities on the world stage.
"In 2006, Science in Sport will continue to support many cycling events as a large portion of our marketing budget is assigned to cycling," said Slater.
"As well as supporting the Great Britain cycling team, Scottish Cycling and the Braveheart Fund, Science in Sport also support many events throughout the year such at the Criterium series at Preston Arena, Notts & Derby Cyclo Cross League, Sleepless in the Saddle, many time trials nationally and the new TwentyFour 12 event by Keith Bontrager."
