Last year the road bike sector was reportedly the most sought after in the UK, with demand outstripping supply in many parts of the country.
According to trade sources, road bikes have not been the clear stars of the show in 2010.
Alpine Bikes director Bryan Shedden told BikeBiz: “The demand for road has not been as strong as it was last year. This year we have seen growth in both hybrid and mountain bikes.
“This year we have not had too many supply issues.”
Bristows Cycles’ David Coxhead also reported noteworthy growth in the hybrid sector.
He told BikeBiz: “Road and ATB have been consistent with last years sales, but Hybrid mens have increased by 50 per cent and there have been a few lost sales in all these categories due to stock availability.
“The one area that has lost sales for us (down 70 per cent) are kids bikes. I think that’s due to the prices now being in the £200-plus range.”
