The appropiately-named James Ryder designed his Split Wheeler bicycle as part of his industrial design course. He entered it in the 2003 Student Plastics Design Competition and it won second prize.
This design comp is sponsored by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, and the Worshipful Company of Horners.
Ryder’s Split Wheeler bike would allow children to start on the trike version and then the wheels would be progressively brought together. The frame would be made from PU-RIM (reaction injection moulded polyurethane).
