"Highly specified mountain bike trails are already under development at Glyncorrwg, and will link with the existing riding at Afan – making this one of the premier mountain biking locations in Wales," said Debbie Burton, a marketing consultant working with the Glyncorrwg Ponds Co-operative.
Glyncorrwg is a former minining town and is smack bang in the middle of some easily-accessible, technically-challenging MTB terrain.
Situated close to the Penhydd and Wall trails, a brand new trail, Whites Level, opened on April 18th.
The terrain around Glyncorrwg is very challenging – high, steep, and with a lot of large rock outcrops, said trail designer Russell Burton,
11kms of the trails 16km length is singletrack.
Whites Level is the first phase of an ambitious development planned for Glyncorrwg. A second, 46km trail is planned for early 2004. Eventually all trails in the area will link via a former railway line, making for over 100km of marked trails, a weekend’s worth of riding, hence the creation of a hub cafe and retail centre.
Businesses seeking to run this outlet would be renting from the Glyncorrwg Ponds Co-operative. This group has benefitted from funding from Cydcoed, a £17 million programme that provides help and 100 per cent grants for community groups. It is funded under the European Unions Objective One programme by the European Union and the Forestry Commission in Wales.
