Mintel will soon be contacting bicycle suppliers and checking trade sources to nail down total and broken down sales figures for publication in a market report due out in November.

How long is a piece of string?

Mintel were precluded from publishing such a report when they collated the statistical data for the Bicycle Association. The BAs service fell through when not enough suppliers provided their raw data to Mintel, which acted as the honest broker.

The BA/Mintel data was only ever supplied to those bicycle supply companies who paid for the service. Not even BA accs and comps companies were allowed to see the data.

The Mintel report price to be announced will be the first widely-available official statistics on UK cycle sales and production for over five years.

NB

The forthcoming BikeBizBible will carry a statistics section based on an updated version of the statistics available on a hyperlink on this website. Many of the bike production figures and brand sales figures will be from news stories run in BicycleBusiness as well as extrapolations from the numbers of imported frames brought into the UK, data that is available from the DTI and EU sources.
